What is a YAM? According to Danny Webster, a yam is a veggie, much like that of a sweet potato.
According to Kato it's our group at First Indian Baptits, that meets monthly for instruction and fellowship. YAM is young adult ministry.
We are currently going through a book called, " Jaded ". It talks about our expectations of life and why people can become cynics and jaded about life.
If there are any group of people that have a right to be jaded about life, it might well be the Native Americans.
The young adults that meet with me all come from different backgrounds. Some being raised on the rez, and others in the city. Some are Native while others are Hispanic and Anglo. All have dealt with many pressures in their life time. Most of these YAMs, by the worlds standards are not deemed as success stories. But to God, they are.
They have given their lives over to him, but still deal with results from lives lived outside of His ways. Alcoholism, drug abuse, failed marriages, and special needs are things that some in this group deal with on a daily basis. Or at least things they have experienced in the past.
We were talking tonight about wounds. We got to a point where we all shared a wound we have had in the past. Some talked about losing a parent. Some talked about an ugly divorce. Some talked about selling and using drugs. Some talked about losing a job. All things that will wound us, and could make us cynical or jaded for life. We become jaded when our expectations of life don't match the reality that life's hardships produce.
Two of the four that were sharing tonight, shared things they said they have never shared with anyone before. I thank the Lord they felt safe enough to share these painful memories and experiences. It is the start of where God will take them to a healing experience. Thank you Lord for this opportunity to lead these YAMs.
Please pray for us as this week I plan to go with a couple of them to pray for one of their step brothers in the hospital. He is dying of a failed liver. This is from a life of drinking. The doctors have given him 2 weeks to live. I just wanted to go and share Christ's love with him. Not too sure he is in a state where he can hear us. But I feel we must at least pray for him.
